Short answer
Before paying, confirm three things: the paying account is verified, the payment is backed by a contract or invoice, and the bank-returned name of the receiving account matches the supplier's details. Afterwards keep the receipt and reconcile by invoice or order number.
Who this applies to
- Businesses paying suppliers, agents, logistics or service providers in Nigeria in naira.
- Business use requires business verification; document requirements and limits follow the review outcome.
Steps
- Get the supplier's full legal name, Nigerian bank and 10-digit account, ideally on the invoice or a signed document.
- Enter the account on the payout page and check that the returned name matches the legal name; for a personal account, confirm how it relates to the supplier.
- Confirm any change of account — especially a sudden change by email or chat — through a phone number you already know.
- Complete your internal approval and make sure the amount matches the invoice before you submit.
- After completion, send the receipt to the supplier and record it against the invoice and order number.
When to pause
Pause and verify when the name does not match, the counterparty pressures you to pay at once, asks you to pay a third party, or will not provide an invoice or contract.
Risks and limits
- Completed payouts usually cannot be reversed, so checks must happen before payment.
- Business payments can trigger extra review and document requests; allow time for this.
- This checklist is not legal or tax advice; consult a professional on foreign-exchange and tax rules for cross-border trade.
